WHY AN ARAI HELMET IS DIFFERENT FROM THE REST
Arai is leading in innovative helmet technology. If you’re looking for a new helmet, you might be asking yourself: can there really be that much difference between one brand and another these days? And if so, haven’t any differences that do exist become pretty slim? The answers are Yes. And No. The simple truth is, while there are indeed a lot of helmets out there, there is still only one Arai. Our technology, but also our philosophy and our passion is what makes us truly different. Here you find a selection of the background of not only our technology, but also the philosophy and the passion that drives us in making the best helmet possible.
WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES ARAI SUCH AN OUTSTANDING HELMET?
Is it the three generations of family driven to producing the best helmet possible? Or maybe the fact that every Arai helmet is almost 100% handmade, the pride of our craftsmen or our own ”in-house” test standard? It can take up to five years to earn the right to create an Arai shell. Each shell can take up to 27 steps and each step must be perfect. That is what separates us from other helmet makers: the pride and care we bring to what we do. Maybe you have still some questions left, we offer you the answers here.
FAMILY OWNED FOR THREE GENERATIONS
We are a true family owned and managed company since 1937. Three generations of riders focused on developing the best possible helmet without compromising for more profits or cheaper production costs. We are proud to have our family name on our products.
HANDMADE BY DEDICATED CRAFTSMEN
To build one Arai helmet will take about 18 man-hours. Each and every Arai helmet is made by hand. We say “almost 100% handmade“. The “almost” restriction is for an automatic laser beam cutting out e.g. the visor aperture. But from the bare outer shell to the finished helmet, including the advanced design applications, the hands of skilled craftsmen perform everything.
VISOR HOLDERS OFFER BETTER PERFORMANCE
Simple, it is the best way to protect the visor system without weakening the outer shell. With a recess in the outer shell either the interior EPS liner must be thinner and harder, or the outer shell must be larger to accommodate a softer, thicker liner. Mainly though, such a deep recess can have sharp edges that may impede the desired smooth dispersal of impact energy along the shell’s naturally curved surface. Instead of making the shell thinner or making deep recesses into it, the Arai holder system ensures maximum shell strength.
FIVE TIMES INSPECTED
Yes. Not once, but in total five times every Arai helmet is inspected by different quality inspectors. Besides, from the shell moulding to the paint area, from shell inspection to the final inspection, each time a craftsman works on a helmet he inspects it in detail to ensure that the customer gets a perfect finished product. In every Arai shell you will find the signature of the man who made it.
Smooth shape for better protectionArai sticks to smooth outer shells with a very good reason. Edgy or square designs may be very fashionable, but when your head hits the ground during an accident you don’t want to decelerate your helmet more than necessary causing harmful rotational forces that may cause additional brain damage. The smooth outer shell of Arai helmets is designed to glide without unnecessary resistance. That’s why all Arai vents and ducts are designed to break off during an impact.
IT IS THE HELMET THAT PROTECTS YOU, NOT THE STANDARD
Meeting the same standard does not necessarily mean that all helmets within the group perform in the same manner or to the same level. Of course an Arai helmet meets the mandatory standard of the market where it is sold. But these standards are our baseline, not our goal. It is the individual helmet that works to protect in the real world, not the standard.
THE ARAI “IN-HOUSE” TEST STANDARD
Arai maintains quality checks according to self-established in-house standard for the products sold around the world in addition to mandatory national standards required by each different country. That is the so called as “Arai Standard”, and it is applied to most Arai products to provide superior performance for motorcyclists.
RACING KNOW-HOW FOR STREET USE
No one can predict the angle, severity, speed, or conditions of an impact on a helmet. That is why all our helmets are created with techniques derived from our long experience in racing. Racing offers extreme conditions because of the very high speeds. Together with our knowledge gained in decades of analyzing day-to-day road traffic accidents, this results in an advanced helmet technology. It is this technology that is used to create a perfect Arai helmet for every type of rider.
WHY ARE ARAI’S RACER’S HELMETS THE VERY SAME AS THE ONES ON THE MARKET?
The Arai helmet you can buy from your local dealer is the very same helmet as worn on the track by professional racers in MotoGP, Formula 1, Motocross, etc. No special, racer-only models whose only resemblance to the one you buy is the paint scheme. It is no coincidence that more than half of all Formula 1 drivers prefer Arai. This fact should tell you a lot about Arai and its standards. In the words of Mr. Mitch Arai, the president and son of the founder: “How can you say one person’s head is worth more than another’s?”
WEIGHT AND PERFORMANCE GO IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS
We could create much lighter helmets if we wanted to, but our vast experience has clearly shown that helmet weight and performance go in opposite directions. What is much more important is the weight distribution and balance of the helmet. A well-balanced helmet will give the impression and experience of a much lighter helmet.
MORE FORMULA 1 DRIVERS PREFER ARAI THAN ANY OTHER BRAND
Did you know that more than half of all Formula 1 drivers have chosen to wear an Arai helmet? The Arai GP series helmets were specially designed for car racing and kart use. The input and feedback we receive from our auto and motorsport- racing drivers is used and integrated in the development of the Arai GP series in particular, but also used for the complete (motorcycle) range.
WHY DOESN’T ARAI MAKE ITS HELMETS COMPLETELY SOUNDPROOF?
Hearing the traffic around you is important. With these sounds you can determine the position, speed and direction of other vehicles in traffic. Arai has deliberately designed an inner shell and liner with enough space around the ears, not only for added comfort, but also to ensure that traffic sound is not completely filtered out.
WHY DOES ARAI CHOOSE TO BE PRESENT IN THE HIGH-END PRICE SEGMENT?
Arai quality, performance, comfort, fit and finish are not compromised to fit a pre-determined retail price. The price of an Arai helmet derives from its quality and we strive to make the best possible helmet. Because of this quality we can offer a 5-year limited warranty on every Arai helmet, making it at the same time one of the most attractive premium helmets available. And remember that you enjoy the comfort and fit of an Arai at every ride. Day after day.
5-YEARS LIMITED WARRANTY
Perhaps the ultimate demonstration of a company’s faith in its product is how strongly it is willing to warrant it. Since 1993 Arai helmets are warranted against defect in material and workmanship for 5 years from the date of first use, but no more than 7 years from the date of manufacture. Arai subscribes to the Snell Memorial Foundation benchmark (US Standard) of five years as the suggested usable lifespan of a motorcycle helmet.
SINCE 1999 WINNER OF THE ”JD POWER AWARD”
The ”Helmet Satisfaction Study” is performed every year by the prestigious American J.D. Power institute, asking actual riders on an annual basis to rate their helmets. Arai has won every single J.D. Power Award since 1999. Tim Fox research manager at J.D. Power: ”Arai continues to improve in the areas critical to customer satisfaction, which has further differentiated it from other manufacturers.”
THE “DOUBLE D-RING” FASTENER
It may look very simple, even old-fashioned, but our “Double D-ring” fastener is in fact a genius device. No moving parts, no corrosion problems and easy to unlock even with one hand. That is why in racing it is the mandatory fastener in many disciplines including MotoGP. Because the Arai rings are flat and D-shaped, they fit smooth against the chin. Just pulling the red tab is enough to loosen the fastener.
60% OF MOTORCYCLE RIDERS USE A (MUCH) TOO LARGE HELMET
According to British research a helmet will only perform optimally when the right size is worn. Therefore, Arai strongly advises you to try on the actual model and size you are considering buying. Due to the different shaped shells of different Arai models, one model might fit you better than another. Make sure when fitting a helmet you focus on your crown fit first, Arai’s optional cheek pad thicknesses can fine-tune your personal fit. Arai offers up to six different outer shells in the size range XXXS-XXXL.
SO, WHY ARAI?
When your own family name is on the front of your helmet how good do you want it to be? For this reason “just good enough” is not good enough for Arai. The family pride is in making the best performing helmet possible. And only when it is made according to our philosophy, when our craftsmen have given their very best, when each single helmet has been inspected five times, a helmet is worth to be finished with the famous oval Arai logo. A helmet is only good enough to carry the family name when we are convinced about its performance for ourselves and our fellow riders. At the end of the day the choice is yours, but we hope you see the difference Arai has to offer.
